Was Daniel Written After The Fact?

Israel & The Church in the Last Days on the problem with the liberal dating of the book of Daniel:

Amman BW 10“One of the most obvious problems for liberal scholarship is presented by the existence of Septuagint, i.e. LXX, as it was the first translation of the Hebrew Bible into another language (Greek). Tradition hold that seventy men from the twelve tribes of Israel met in Alexandria, Egypt to translate the Bible at the behest of Ptolemy II 283BC-246BC. Unfortunately for these Critical Scholars the Septuagint contains the Book of Daniel 150 years before the Maccabean revolt, and to totally destroy their arguments, recently, a fragment of Daniel has been found in the cache of the Dead Sea Scrolls that dates roughly to within 50 years of Daniel’s internal date. See: New Light on the Book of Daniel from the Dead Sea Scrolls.”

This is not to mention the fact that Daniel predicts the rise of Roman Catholicism, which occurred hundreds of years after the book was quoted in the New Testament.

The End of the Papacy’s Temporal Power (2015 Again)

2015 at the earliest:

2015, or Thereabout

Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible re Daniel 7:25:

1155587_69316675Until a time and times and the dividing of time – In prophetic language a time signifies a year; and a prophetic year has a year for each day. Three years and a half (a day standing for a year, as in John 9:24) will amount to one thousand two hundred and sixty years, if we reckon thirty days to each month, as the Jews do.

If we knew precisely when the papal power began to exert itself in the antichristian way, then we could at once fix the time of its destruction. The end is probably not very distant; it has already been grievously shaken by the French. In 1798 the French republican army under General Berthier took possession of the city of Rome, and entirely superseded the whole papal power. This was a deadly wound, though at present it appears to be healed; but it is but skinned over, and a dreadful cicatrice remains. The Jesuits, not Jesus, are now the Church’s doctors.

If the papal power, as a horn or temporal power, be intended here, which is most likely, (and we know that that power was given in 755 to Pope Stephen II. by Pepin, king of France), counting one thousand two hundred and sixty years from that, we are brought to a.d. 2015, about one hundred and ninety years from the present [a.d. 1825]. But I neither lay stress upon nor draw conclusions from these dates. If the Church of Rome will reform itself, it will then be the true Christian Church, and will never be destroyed. Let it throw aside all that is ritually Jewish, all that is heathen; all that which pretends to be of God, and which is only of man, all doctrines that are not in the Bible; and all rites and ceremonies which are not of the appointment of Christ and his apostles; and then, all hail the once Roman, but now, after such a change, the Holy, Catholic Church! Every true Protestant would wish rather the reform than the extinction of this Church.

Here is a link to an interesting chart that parallels the histories of the Old and New Testament churches:

The author of this chart, according to his other books, places the start of the millennium sometime around 2033.  Let’s hope that will be the latest!

The Identity of Antichrist and the Year 2015

Revelation 13:18:  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Here is a link to an article discussing how the number 666 relates to Papal Rome and the identity of Antichrist:

The Antichrist Has Been Revealed!!:

666 equals LATEINOS in Greek!!

Another post from the same source alluding to 2015 can be found here:  http://www.reformation.org/damballah.html

This article gives a fairly traditional historicist interpretation of Revelation 13.

Interestingly, many historicists seem to link the downfall of Antichrist with the second decade of the 21st century.  This has to do with Revelation 11 and the 1260 years of Antichrist’s reign.  This article fingers the year 2015, stating:

Many of the commentators on the Book of Revelation, such as Adam Clarke and Baptist pastor John Dowling, predicted that 2015 would be a milestone in the demise of the Papacy. Here is a quote from his book written in 1840:

If, according to Adam Clarke, in 755, when the temporal sovereignty of the popes was firmly established, then they will end in 175 years, or 2015. (Dowling, An Exposition of the Prophecies, p. 191).

Based on this prediction, time is running out for the Papal dynasty.

Time will tell if this time calculation is correct, although it does not appear that the author took into consideration the changes from the ancient Roman calendar to the Gregorian calendar we use today.  Some commentators arrive at different dates when the calendar conversion is taken into account.

In any case, the Bible tells us what will happen when Antichrist falls:

Revelation 16:17-21:  And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.  And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.  And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.  And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.  And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

These are definitely very interesting times we live in!

Timing and the Return of Christ

Date Fixing

Arthur Pink, 1938

Not only hysterical sensationalists—but some of the most sober minded and spiritual servants of God have attempted to draw conclusions and forecast the future from the “signs of the times” which appeared in their sky. The state of the world in their day, the corruption and apostasy of Christendom, and the calamitous judgments sent by God on an evil and adulterous generation, convinced them that such things were most certainly the immediate prelude to the appearing of Christ in Person. Others averred that Divine Prophecy intimated the very year in which the Papacy would be overthrown or the Day of Judgment would occur.

And what is the moral to be drawn from all of this? What is the practical lesson—for it is a practical end we have had in view, and not the amusing of the curious or the entertaining of those who have an idle hour to pass away. Surely it is this, “For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild donkey’s colt” (Job 11:12)—yes, wise in his own conceits, wise above that which God has revealed, wise in the esteem of his fellows.

He would pose before others as possessing a spiritual light and discernment which lifts him above the rank and file; he pretends unto light received from the Word which is denied those who walk not so closely with God as he does. The Spirit has shown him “things to come,” only for the passing of time to demonstrate it was some other spirit than the Spirit of God.

When the disciples asked Christ, “Will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6), He did not say whether He would or would not, neither did He tell them that they entertained an erroneous conception of “the kingdom.” No, He struck more deeply, and made answer which applies to all His followers until the end of time, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own power” (v. 7). That is definite and it is final. Shun, then, my reader, those who controvert the Son of God by seeking to persuade that you may, “know the times and the seasons,” that if you will accept their interpretations (?) of Prophecy you will be granted a spiritual insight into those things of which the world is ignorant. “The coming of the Lord draws near” (James 3:8)—it is ever drawing nearer—but for any man to affirm that the coming of the Lord is now at the very doors, is to affirm what Scripture nowhere warrants, and is a piece of bombastic impertinence.

Our pressing duty is to set bounds to an unholy curiosity, and rest content with the blessed fact that the future is entirely in the hands of the Most High. It is the present which limits the boundaries of our responsibility. God is working all things after the counsel of His own will, so that there is no cause for alarm or fear. Not only cannot the forces of evil go one inch farther than what has been Divinely ordained—but, even now, God is making them to subserve His own wise and holy purpose. Nothing we do, or fail to do, will either hasten or retard by a single hour the consummation of God’s counsels.

“All things work together for good to those who love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28) provides a sure resting-place for the renewed heart.

Speculations about future history are not only futile—but impious. An itching mind that craves information about coming events is a hindrance and not a help to present godliness.

Leave the future with God, and seek grace to discharge your present duty. Part of our present duty, as well as our precious privilege, is to be “looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). But that is a vastly different thing from occupying our minds with the evil that is at work in the world. To be “looking for that blessed Hope” is entirely an attitude of the heart—the soul being engaged with the person of Christ Himself, anticipating that glad moment when He will perfectly conform us to His image. But as to when He will appear, the angels in Heaven know not, much less can we on earth ascertain it. To be prepared for His coming is the great thing, and not to be curiously prying into the how and when of it!
