The Westminster Confession on the Papacy

Papal_BeastCHAPTER 23 – Of the Civil Magistrate section 4: It is the duty of people to pray for magistrates, to honour their persons, to pay them tribute and other dues, to obey their lawful commands, and to be subject to their authority, for conscience’ sake. Infidelity, or difference in religion, doth not make void the magistrates’ just and legal authority, nor free the people from their due obedience to them: from which ecclesiastical persons are not exempted; much less hath the Pope any power and jurisdiction over them in their dominions, or over any of their people; and, least of all, to deprive them of their dominions, or lives, if he shall judge them to be heretics, or upon any other pretence whatsoever.

CHAPTER 25 – Of the Church, section 6:  There is no other head of the Church, but the Lord Jesus Christ; nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself, in the Church. against Christ and all that is called God.

John Wesley on 2 Thessalonians 2:3

Henricus 4. Emperour surrendering his crowne to the Pope. Image of Antichrist

“However, in many respects, the Pope has an indisputable claim to those titles. He is, in an emphatical sense, the man of sin, as he increases all manner of sin above measure. And he is, too, properly styled, the son of perdition, as he has caused the death of numberless multitudes, both of his opposers and followers, destroyed innumerable souls, and will himself perish everlastingly. He it is that opposeth himself to the emperor, once his rightful sovereign; and that exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped. Commanding angels and putting kings under his feet, both of whom are called gods in scripture; claiming the highest power, the highest honour; suffering himself, not once only, to be styled God or vice-God. Indeed no less is implied in his ordinary title, ‘Most Holy Lord,’ or ‘Most Holy Father,’ so that he sitteth enthroned in the temple of God, mentioned in Rev. 11:1. Declaring himself that he is God – claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone.””

Did Protestants Once Know The Identity Of Antichrist?

Here is a sermon by Rev. Stephen Hamilton examining the historic Protestant view of Antichrist:

Antichrist : The Pope? -The Historic Protestant View

In this sermon, Rev. Hamilton quotes many notable Protestants from over the centuries, all of whom held that the papacy is Antichrist.  Sadly, he also notes that modern-day Lutherans and Anglicans have once again united with Rome, agreeing that the Reformation was a mistake.  It is a sad time, indeed, to be a Protestant.

Like The Growth Of A Little Horn

Cows grazing below the Marian Tower - geograph.org.uk - 1760060

And here we must just remark, that Popery did not at any time appear ready made on the world’s platform.  It was not like Mahometanism, which was constructed by one man, and brought out complete after a certain retirement from the world; but it was like the growth of a little horn, commencing with soft and unnoticed buddings, until, as time advanced, it acquired length and strength, and hardness.  In fact, the process has been very much that which we see in dissolving views; you look at one time at a given picture, and at the very time that you moat admire it, certain lines become fainter, and others stronger, so that after a while you discover that the whole landscape is completely changed.  You have had your attention fixed throughout, but the change has been so gradual, the fading and brightening of the different parts so imperceptible, that though you now see the lofty tower where a few moments back the cattle were grazing in the meadow, you are at a loss to decide when the change commenced, or what were the distinct steps of its accomplishment.  Just so it has been with Popery.  Men began by looking at Christianity; they beheld its beauty and admired it; but as they looked, a faintness gradually crept over its outline; its finest touches began insensibly to disappear; the lines of a new picture by degrees took their place, till at length the whole scene became changed, and instead of Christianity we found Popery; instead of Christ we saw Antichrist exalted in his room.

Every Characteristic Is Clearly Found In The Papacy

Pope Benedictus XVI - St. Peter's Square - Vatican City - 11 Oct. 2008

John Brown on Antichrist:

“The above characteristics drawn from Scripture cannot be wholly found in the heathen Emperors of Rome, much less in the fanciful Danitish-Antichrist of popish writers, or the Armillus of the Jews, or the Daggial of the Mahometans. The Mahometan system may indeed be considered as a lesser antichrist, but neither contain all the characteristics applicable to it. It does not sit in the Church, nor appear to men to have a power equal to God’s. It allows no idolatry, nor is it notable for the persecution of the saints, nor was it established by lying wonders, but by the power of the sword. Actually, every characteristic is clearly found in the papacy.”

The Pope Is The Man Of Sin

Here is a series from Covenanter Reformation showing that the Pope of Rome IS the Man of Sin described in 2 Thessalonians 2.

Antichrist1Part 1 discusses how Antichrist and the Man of Sin are identical: https://covenanterreformation.wordpress.com/2015/04/17/the-pope-the-man-of-sin-part-1/

Part 2 discusses how the Pope fulfills the description in 2 Thessalonians 2: https://covenanterreformation.wordpress.com/2015/04/20/the-pope-the-man-of-sin-part-2/

Part 3 discusses who the “restrainer” is and how Antichrist was to appear after the fall of the Roman Empire: https://covenanterreformation.wordpress.com/2015/05/04/the-pope-the-man-of-sin-part-3/

Here is just one quote from this series showing that historicism is the long-standing interpretation of the believing church:

Cyril of Jerusalem (313 – 386): “But this aforesaid Antichrist is to come when the times of the Roman Empire shall have been fulfilled, and the end of the world is drawing near. There shall rise up together ten kings of the Romans, reigning in different parts perhaps, but all about the same time; and after those an eleventh, the Antichrist, who by his magical craft shall seize upon the Roman power; and of the kings who reigned before him, ‘three he shall humble,’ and the remaining seven he shall keep in subjection to himself.” Catechetical Lectures, section 15, on II Thessalonians 2:4, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, vol. VII

Why Nero is not the Beast

Covenanter Reformation:

Nero pushkin“Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.” – Revelation 13:18 (NKJV)

Following a previous blog post on the differences between partial preterism and historicism, I thought it would be interesting to deal with the mysterious number, 666. There have been many interpretations of this verse but I want to focus on two major views within postmillennialism. The partial preterist view is that 666 is the calculation of Emperor Nero’s name in Hebrew (Nrwn Qsr). Each Hebrew letter has a number associated with it and when added up it equals the number of the beast. The other view is the historicist interpretation, which I will explain after critiquing the partial preterist view…

The reasons why Nero is not the beast, as explained in the above-mentioned article are, briefly:

1. The Name is calculated from Hebrew instead of Greek.

2. The calculation of the 666 is not for a specific individual.

3. “Nrwn Qsr” is not the common Hebrew spelling for Nero’s name.

4. “616” manuscript variant should be rejected.

5. There are no early church interpretations that fit the Neron Kaiser interpretation.

Protestant Confessions Condemning The Pope As Antichrist

Another great list from Covenanter Reformation:

If You Would Have Antichrist Fall In The Earth

Richard Alleine discusses the need for personal reformation before national reformation:

“But would you that your prayers should be heard? Then arise out of your places, and fall every man upon a personal reformation. Down with your sin, and out with the world; lift up Christ in your hearts, if you would have Antichrist fall in the earth; let Christ have a name within you above every name, and let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity, — from his own iniquity; seek not for corn, and for wine, or for freedom to sit down every man under his own vine, and under his own fig-tree, where none shall make them afraid; but seek the Lord, that the Lord God may dwell among you,  — may delight in you and be exalted by you, that you may indeed become the people of his holiness, and the people of his prayer. Seek to be made partakers of his holiness, and follow after holiness, and so follow after that which ye may obtain. Let there be such a heart in you, and such a holy design heartily taken up, and zealously pursued by you; and the Lord will certainly accept you, and answer your prayers, and your profane enemies will then learn to take heed how they again mock or boast themselves against the prayers of the saints.”

Politically, Socially, and Legislatively

Rev. Alan Cairns describes the current three-pronged attack against Christianity:

“We are in a battle with an enemy that is more ferocious and fearsome than the Philistines ever were. The cause of Jesus Christ across the world is under attack from militant Islam, from Romanism now dressed up as almost evangelicalism. It is under attack from Humanism. The gospel of Jesus Christ is under attack politically, socially, legislatively. It is under attack from the outside. It is under attack from apostates on the inside. The gospel of Jesus Christ is nowadays under serious and terrible attack. We all know that. You look at what has happened in your own lifetime, unless you are one of the very young and I think even the very young could probably, if they had the wherewithal to do the search, they could trace even what has happened in their few years. But look at your own lifetime and see what has happened in your own nation. And it is incredible. It is utterly beyond belief.”

It seems to me that this was prophesied thousands of years ago.  If this isn’t a fulfillment of Revelation 16 and Armageddon, I don’t know what is:

Revelation 16:13-16:  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon [Humanism/Paganism], and out of the mouth of the beast [Romanism and apostate Protestantism], and out of the mouth of the false prophet [Islam]. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.   Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.  And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Here is Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible on the above passage so you can see how it eerily parallels what Rev. Cairns is describing [color added]:

Revelation 16:13

And I saw three unclean spirits – They assumed a visible form which would well represent their odiousness – that of frogs – but still they are spoken of as “spirits.” They were evil powers, or evil influences (Revelation16:14, “spirits of devils”), and the language here is undoubtedly designed to represent some such power or influence which would, at that period, proceed from the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet.

Like frogs – βατράχοι  batrachoi. This word does not occur in the New Testament except in the passage before us. It is properly translated frogs. The frog is here employed clearly as a symbol, and it is designed that certain qualities of the “spirits” here referred to should be designated by the symbol. For a full illustration of the meaning of the symbol, the reader may consult Bochart, Hieroz. P. II. lib. v. cap. 4. According to Bochart, the frog is characterized, as a symbol:

(1)    for its rough, harsh, coarse voice;
(2)    on this account, as a symbol of complaining or reproaching;
(3)    as a symbol of empty loquacity;
(4)    as a symbol of heretics and philosophers, as understood by Augustine;
(5)    because the frog has its origin in mud, and lives in mud, as a symbol of those who are born in sin, and live in pollution;
(6)    because the frog endures all changes of the season cold and heat, summer, winter, rain, frost – as a symbol of monks who practice self-denial;
(7)    because the frog though abstemious of food, yet lives in water and drinks often, as a symbol of drunkards;
(8)    as a symbol of impudence;
(9)    because the frog swells his size, and distends his cheeks, as a symbol of pride.

See the authorities for these uses of the word in Bochart. How many or few of these ideas enter into the symbol here, it is not easy to decide. We may suppose, however, that the spirits referred to would be characterized by pride, arrogance, impudence, assumption of authority; perhaps impurity and vileness, for all these ideas enter into the meaning of the symbol. They are not here, probably, symbols of persons, but of influences or opinions which would be spread abroad, and which would characterize the age referred to. The reference is to what the “dragon,” the “beast,” and the “false prophet” would do at that time in opposing the truth, and in preparing the world for the great and final conflict.

Out of the mouth of the dragon – One of which seemed to issue from the mouth of the dragon. On the symbolic meaning of the word “dragon,” see the notes on Revelation 12:3. It, in general, represents Satan, the great enemy of the church; perhaps here Satan under the form of paganism or paganism, as in Revelation12:3-4. The idea then is, that, at the time referred to, there would be some manifestation of the power of Satan in the pagan nations, which would be bold, arrogant, proud, loquacious, hostile to truth, and which would be well represented by the hoarse murmur of the frog.

And out of the mouth of the beastThe papacy, as above explained, Rev. 13. That is, there would be some putting forth of arrogant pretensions; some loud denunciation or complaining; some manifestation of pride and self-consequence, which would be well represented by the croaking of the frog. We have seen above (notes on Revelation16:5-6), that although the fifth vial was poured upon “the seat of the beast,” the effect was not to crush and overthrow that power entirely. The papacy would still survive, and would be finally destroyed under the outpouring of the seventh vial, Revelation 16:17-21. In the passage before us we have a representation of it as still living; as having apparently recovered its strength; and as being as hostile as ever to the truth, and able to enter into a combination, secret or avowed, with the “dragon” and the “false prophet,” to oppose the reign of truth upon the earth.

And out of the mouth of the false prophet – The word rendered “false prophet” –  ψευδοπροφήτου  pseudoprophētou – does not before occur in the Book of Revelation, though the use of the article would seem to imply that some well-known power or influence was referred to by this. Compare the notes on Revelation 10:3. The word occurs in other places in the New Testament, Matthew 7:15; Matthew 24:11, Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:22; Luke 6:26; Acts 13:6; 2 Peter 2:1; 1 John 4:1; and twice elsewhere in the Book of Revelation, with the same reference as here, Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10. In both these latter places it is connected with the “beast:” “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet”; “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are.” It would seem, then, to refer to some power that was similar to that of the beast, and that was to share the same fate in the overthrow of the enemies of the gospel. As to the application of this, there is no opinion so probable as that it alludes to the Muhammedan power – not strictly the Turkish power, for that was to be “dried up,” or to diminish; but to the Muhammedan power as such, that was still to continue for a while in its vigor, and that was yet to exert a formidable influence against the gospel, and probably in some combination, in fact, if not in form, with paganism stud the papacy. The reasons for this opinion are:

(a)    that this was referred to, in the former part of the book, as one of the formidable powers that would arise, and that would materially affect the destiny of the world – and it may be presumed that it would be again referred to in the account of the final consummation, see Revelation 9:1-11;
(b)    the name “false prophet” would, better than any other, describe that power, and would naturally suggest it in future times – for to no one that has ever appeared in our world could the name be so properly applied as to Muhammed; and,
(c)    what is said will be found to agree with the facts in regard to that power, as, in connection with the papacy and with paganism, constituting the sum of the obstruction to the spread of the gospel around the world.

It would be easy to despair in such days, but remember the promised outcome:

Revelation 17:14:  These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
