Historicism’s Pedigree

For eighteen hundred years scholarly Christian men , enlightened by the Holy Spirit, used Bible prophecies to shed light on the historical events engulfing them and to encourage them with the assurance that the same omniscient God Who had foreknown ( actually planned) history so accurately was the same omnipotent God Who was with them through the most severe trials and would bring them through victoriously to present them faultless at Jesus’ coming. This was the message of assurance, hope and victory which enabled and empowered countless thousands of Jesus’ followers to remain faithful through experiences of persecutions, tortures and martyrdoms, so sadistic and beastly that they are no longer even discussed in Christian churches because they are too politically incorrect.

It was their understanding of the key principles of bible prophecy that enabled Godly men “ to understand their times “ in such a way as to recognize and expose “ the man of sin “ and so to lay the foundation for the Protestant Reformation.

“The Catholic Origins of Futurism and Preterism”

In this the “Historical” interpretation, the antichrist was clearly not merely a single individual, it was a system of apostasy and persecution that would hold sway for over twelve centuries. The inevitable conclusion of those who studied these prophesies in scripture, before and during the Protestant Reformation, was that there was only one entity that fit all the above characteristics: the papal dynasty of the Roman Catholic Church. Is it any wonder that the Catholic Church was so violently opposed to the scriptures being available for everyone to read for themselves? There was such a stir created during the reformation that the  Fifth Lateran Council (1512-17 A.D.) resorted to strictly forbidding anyone to publish a book without prior censorship, and also prohibited anyone from preaching on the subject of antichrist:

John Knox: Rome is of the devil

Reformed Covenanter

[T]hose that have condemned me (the whole rabble of the papistical clergy) have declined from the true faith, have given ear to deceivable spirits and to doctrine of devils, are the stars fallen from the heaven to earth, are fountains without water, and finally are enemies to Christ Jesus, deniers of His virtue and horrible blasphemers of His death and passion.

And further, as that visible church had no crime whereof justly they could accuse either the Prophets either the Apostles, except their doctrine only, so have no such as seek my blood other crime to lay my charge except that I affirm, as always I offer to prove, that the religion which now is maintained by fire and sword is no less contrarious to the true religion taught and established by the Apostles than is darkness to light or the devil to God; and also that such as now…

The Papacy is The Antichrist!

Truth in Grace

The London Baptist Confession of 1689 and the Westminster Confession both identify the office of Pope, within the Roman Catholic Church, as antichrist. Many modern evangelicals have lost sight of the reason for The Reformation and think Vatican II brought Rome closer to Protestant soteriology. This is a sadly mistaken conclusion, as Rome has never refuted The Council Of Trent, which proclaims damnation on all who hold to salvation by grace alone by faith alone in Christ alone. To this day, Rome proclaims an infused grace from their false Christ that empowers the Catholic to work his spiritual birth by his own efforts.

Below is a snapshot of the Preface to a 50 page booklet by J.A. Wylie wherein he documents the biblical case that proves the perspective in the two confessions noted above. The complete booklet can be found here. May the blood-bought saints of the living God…

PID Interview on Peter the Roman, the Final Pope

Model Vatican 2

Here is a link to an interesting interview by PID Radio on the Prophecy of the Popes and its termination in a final Pope named Peter the Roman:  http://www.pidradio.com/2012/02/26/p-i-d-radio-22612-peter-the-roman-the-final-pope/

The interview contains many interesting details as well as a fascinating attempt to fit reformed historicist eschatology into a dispensational futurist framework.

St. Malachy’s Prophecy of the Popes ends this way:

In the extreme persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit [i.e., as bishop] Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations: and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the terrible judge will judge his people.
The End.

Will the next Pope be Peter?  Only time will tell.

John Calvin on 2 Thessalonians 2

John_Calvin_01John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book IV, Chap. 7, Sect. 25…
To some we seem slanderers and railers when we call the Roman pontiff “Antichrist.” But those who think so do not realize they are accusing Paul of intemperate language, after whom we speak, indeed, so speak from his very lips. And lest anyone object that we wickedly twist Paul’s words (which apply to another) against the Roman pontiff, I shall briefly show that these cannot be understood otherwise than of the papacy.”
“Paul writes that Antichrist will sit in God’s temple [II Thes. 2:4]. In another place, also, the Spirit, describing his image in the person of Antiochus, shows that this kingdom will consist in boasting and blaspheming of God [Dan. 7:25; Rev. 3:10; 13:5]. Hence, we infer that this is a tyranny more over souls than over bodies, which is raised up against the spiritual kingdom of Christ.”
“Secondly, that this tyranny is such as does not wipe out either the name of Christ or of the church but rather misuses a semblance of Christ and lurks under the name of the church as under a mask. All the heresies and sects which have been from the beginning belong to the kingdom of Antichrist. Nevertheless, when Paul foretells a falling away that is to come [II Thes. 2:3] by this description, he means that that seat of abomination will be raised up when a universal apostasy seizes the church, even though many scattered members of the church persevere in the true unity of faith. But Paul adds that in his time Antichrist began to undertake his work in the mystery of iniquity [II Thes. 2:7], which he was afterward to complete openly; by this we understand that this calamity was to be neither caused by one man, nor finished in one man.”
“Now, he designates Antichrist by this mark, that he will deprive God of his honor in order to take it upon himself [II Thes. 2:4]. We ought consequently to follow this as the chief indication in searching out Antichrist, especially when such pride leads even to the public scattering of the church. Since, therefore, it is clear that the Roman pontiff has shamelessly transferred to himself what belonged to God alone and especially to Christ, we should have no doubt that he is the leader and standard-bearer of that impious and hateful kingdom.”

Vatican told to Pay Taxes

After several years of scandal in which the Catholic Church has faced allegations of financial impropriety, paedophile priests and rumours of plots to kill the Pope, the Vatican is now facing a new €600m-a-year tax bill as Rome seeks to head off European Commission censure over controversial property tax breaks enjoyed by the Church.

Revelation 17:16-17:  And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

“EU Plans Full-Fledged ‘Political Union'”

European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso has told the Chinese public that the EU will become a fully-fledged “political union” after the financial crisis.

Revelation 16:13-16:  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Revelation 17:12-14:  And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.  These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.  These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

The History of the Romeward Movement in the Church of England, 1833-1864 by Walter Walsh: Quotes From Chapter 2

800px-Pieter_Bruegel_the_Elder_-_The_Tower_of_Babel_(Vienna)_-_Google_Art_Project_-_edited“…they [Newman and Froude] seem to have thought it possible to obtain from the Papal authorities ‘some dispensation’ which ‘would enable them to communicate with Rome without violation of conscience’ – apparently thinking that they could thus ‘communicate with Rome’ while remaining as clergymen of the Church of England.”

“Wiseman judged differently from this brief visit, and, with characteristic hopefulness, made up his mind that if these men represented the rising generation at Oxford, the centre of English religious life, great changes were in store for the country.”

“You will find as an historical fact that the feeling of sympathy with other Protestant communions, non-episcopal, was coincident with the best and most Protestant times of the Church of England, whilst the withdrawal of that sympathy was coincident with times when Romish tendencies and Romish influences began to invade that Church.” [quoting the Duke of Argyll]

“It seems to have been forgotten in the present day, that many of the leaders of the Tractarian party were from its very birth favourable to the entire separation of the Church of England from State control.”

“I am amused to find, that while the clergy were looking to the Puseyites as their defence against the formidable Dissenters, those very Puseyites were on the side of the foe.” [quoting Mr. F. W. Newman]

“And so, nominally to oppose the Latitudinarian spirit of the age, but in reality to build up a High Church Movement opposed to Protestantism, Keble, Newman, Froude, Percival, and their disciples banded themselves together into a party.”

“No one can now deny that the Oxford Movement had made ‘a row in the world.’  It has torn the Church of England asunder, broken up its peace, and filled it with quarrels and dissensions.”

“Soon after Queen Mary came to the throne, hearing his church bells ringing one day, he went into the building to ascertain the cause.  There, to his utter astonishment, he found that his honest communion table had been changed for a Popish altar, and a priest was actually saying Mass there at the moment, surrounded by armed men.  Thereupon Dr. Taylor said to the priest, in the forcible language common in those days, ‘Thou devil! Who made thee so bold to enter into this Church of Christ to profane and defile it with this abominable idolatry?  I command thee, thou Popish wolf, in the name of God to avoid hence, and not to presume here, with such Popish idolatry, to poison Christ’s flock.’

For faithful conduct like this Dr. Taylor was committed to prison, and put upon his trial. The principal charges against him were his denial of the doctrines of the Real Presence and the Sacrifice of the Mass, both of which doctrines are now commonly taught by the men who are the successors of those who, by a strange coincidence, met in Hadleigh Rectory in the month of July 1833.”

“In the very spot where the Protestant Reformation began in that part of the country, the anti-Reformation Movement first erected its head.”

“There was another work undertaken at this Hadleigh Conference.  It was that of revising a new Catechism for the laity, which was subsequently published under the title of the Churchman’s Manual…in which the chief feature is the doctrine of Apostolical Succession.”

“From the commencement of the Oxford Movement its proceedings were conducted with a considerable amount of secrecy.”

“We have set up Church Societies all over the kingdom, or at least mean to do so.  Already the seeds of revolution are planted in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Devonshire, Gloucestershire, Kent and Suffolk.  Our object is to maintain the doctrine of the Apostolical Succession and save the Liturgy from illegal alterations.  Hitherto we have had great success…It is no slight thing to be made the instrument of handing down the principles of Laud till the time comes…” [quoting Newman]

“Newman’s object was evidently that of propagating a system which had ever been hateful to Protestants, whether they were Evangelicals or not.”

“It was not quite fair either, on the part of Dr. Pusey, to omit any mention of the real reason why so many Fast Days are mentioned in the Prayer-Book Calendar.  Any one who consults Cardwell’s Doctrinal Annals of the Reformed Church of England will learn that they were appointed, not in the interests of religion, but in the interests of the fishermen of the time, who, but for these Fast Days, in which fish and not flesh was eaten, would have been utterly ruined.”

“Mark my words, these Tracts are the beginning of a Catholic Movement which will one day end in the return of her Church to Catholic unity and the See of Peter.” [quoting Mr. Ambrose Phillipps De Lisle]

“Thus did Priestcraft rear once more its proud head in the Reformed Church of England and demand of the laity that they should meekly bow their necks to its arrogant sway.”
