Despisers of Chastity and Morality

A Chronicle of England - Page 363 - Henry Marches Out Against the Lollards

Henry V sets forth to pacify the Lollards in 1414

The following quote is about the persecution of the Wycliffites/Lollards.  However, the emphasized portion rings true to today.  How many times are Protestants today castigated in the press as being “immoral,” “haters,” “intolerant,” etc.?:

But the malice of those blood-thirsty Catholics was not even then satiated. It is as fresh now, as it was then. Papists are not content, that hundreds of years ago, Wickliffe and his followers should be persecuted, and the greater portion of them massacred and burned. Their memories, also, are objects of Popish hatred, even to this day on which I write. They represent them as enemies of the human race. As despisers of chastity and morality. You will probably see these charges advanced against them in the Popish presses throughout the United States. But recollect, Americans, that age does not improve the piety of Papists. The older holy mother gets, the harder becomes her heart, and the more bitter her virulence. I might satisfy you, if necessary, on the testimony of the most respectable Protestant writers, that there lived not in the world, a people more simple, more pious, or virtuous than the Waldenses, or Wickliffites. It may be said of them, with truth, “qualis pater tales filii.” But I will not refer to Protestant authority; knavish, lying, Popish priests may question it! I refer you, for the character of this persecuted people, to an early Popish historian, Florimond—. History of Heresy, book vii. ch. 7.

“They”—the Waldenses—says this writer, “have nothing in their mouths but Christ the Saviour—they know nothing else than Jesus Christ. These people read the Bible continually, in such a manner that they know all the books of it by heart.” Horrid people these Wickliffites must be, to read the Bible until they know it by heart!

She Only Suspends It For The Moment

Errors of the Roman Catholic Church, or, Centuries of oppression, persecution and ruin (1899) (14779888675)This is the church, and her members are the men, whom you are countenancing amongst you. The Romish church never surrendered the right which she once claimed of destroying heretics. She only suspends it for the moment, until her strength and numbers shall enable her to enforce it. But there are some who will not believe this, especially when Catholic priests and bishops deny it. Many Protestants, who are natives of this country, and unacquainted with Roman Catholic doctrines, will not believe it. Many, even, of our Protestant clergymen will scarcely believe it; such is the craft and consummate falsehood of priests and bishops, that I have never met with one Protestant who entertained the most remote idea that keeping no faith with heretics, and persecuting them to death, formed any portion of the doctrine of the church of Rome.

To Persecute To The Last Extremity

The mass and vestments of the Catholic church, liturgical, doctrinal, historical and archaeological (1909) (14595415580)

“Let him, and all Roman Catholics, be denied the right of voting, or of holding any office of honor, profit, or trust, under the government of the United States, until they forswear all allegiance, in spiritual as well as temporal affairs, to all foreign potentates and Popes. Until this is done, an oath of allegiance to this government, by a Roman Catholic, is entitled to no credit, and should not be received. This will appear evident to Americans, if they will turn their attention for a moment to the following oath, which is taken by every Romish bishop, before he is permitted to officiate, as such, in any of these United States:— “I do solemnly swear, on the holy evangelist, and before Almighty God, to defend the domains of St. Peter against every aggressor; to preserve, augment, and extend, the rights, honors, privileges, and powers of the Lord Pope, and his successors; to observe, and with all my might to enforce, his decrees, ordinances, reservations, provisions, and all dispositions whatever, emanating from the court of Rome; to persecute and combat, to the last extremity, heretics, schismatics, and all who will not pay to the sovereign pontiff all the obedience which the sovereign shall require.””

Politically, Socially, and Legislatively

Apocalypse_25._The_angels_pour_out_their_vials_of_wrath._Revelation_16._Merian._Phillip_Medhurst_Collection

Rev. Alan Cairns describes the current three-pronged attack against Christianity:

“We are in a battle with an enemy that is more ferocious and fearsome than the Philistines ever were. The cause of Jesus Christ across the world is under attack from militant Islam, from Romanism now dressed up as almost evangelicalism. It is under attack from Humanism. The gospel of Jesus Christ is under attack politically, socially, legislatively. It is under attack from the outside. It is under attack from apostates on the inside. The gospel of Jesus Christ is nowadays under serious and terrible attack. We all know that. You look at what has happened in your own lifetime, unless you are one of the very young and I think even the very young could probably, if they had the wherewithal to do the search, they could trace even what has happened in their few years. But look at your own lifetime and see what has happened in your own nation. And it is incredible. It is utterly beyond belief.”

It seems to me that this was prophesied thousands of years ago.  If this isn’t a fulfillment of Revelation 16 and Armageddon, I don’t know what is:

Revelation 16:13-16:  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon [Humanism/Paganism], and out of the mouth of the beast [Romanism and apostate Protestantism], and out of the mouth of the false prophet [Islam]. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.   Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.  And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Here is Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible on the above passage so you can see how it eerily parallels what Rev. Cairns is describing [color added]:

Revelation 16:13

And I saw three unclean spirits – They assumed a visible form which would well represent their odiousness – that of frogs – but still they are spoken of as “spirits.” They were evil powers, or evil influences (Revelation16:14, “spirits of devils”), and the language here is undoubtedly designed to represent some such power or influence which would, at that period, proceed from the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet.

Like frogs – βατράχοι  batrachoi. This word does not occur in the New Testament except in the passage before us. It is properly translated frogs. The frog is here employed clearly as a symbol, and it is designed that certain qualities of the “spirits” here referred to should be designated by the symbol. For a full illustration of the meaning of the symbol, the reader may consult Bochart, Hieroz. P. II. lib. v. cap. 4. According to Bochart, the frog is characterized, as a symbol:

(1)    for its rough, harsh, coarse voice;
(2)    on this account, as a symbol of complaining or reproaching;
(3)    as a symbol of empty loquacity;
(4)    as a symbol of heretics and philosophers, as understood by Augustine;
(5)    because the frog has its origin in mud, and lives in mud, as a symbol of those who are born in sin, and live in pollution;
(6)    because the frog endures all changes of the season cold and heat, summer, winter, rain, frost – as a symbol of monks who practice self-denial;
(7)    because the frog though abstemious of food, yet lives in water and drinks often, as a symbol of drunkards;
(8)    as a symbol of impudence;
(9)    because the frog swells his size, and distends his cheeks, as a symbol of pride.

See the authorities for these uses of the word in Bochart. How many or few of these ideas enter into the symbol here, it is not easy to decide. We may suppose, however, that the spirits referred to would be characterized by pride, arrogance, impudence, assumption of authority; perhaps impurity and vileness, for all these ideas enter into the meaning of the symbol. They are not here, probably, symbols of persons, but of influences or opinions which would be spread abroad, and which would characterize the age referred to. The reference is to what the “dragon,” the “beast,” and the “false prophet” would do at that time in opposing the truth, and in preparing the world for the great and final conflict.

Out of the mouth of the dragon – One of which seemed to issue from the mouth of the dragon. On the symbolic meaning of the word “dragon,” see the notes on Revelation 12:3. It, in general, represents Satan, the great enemy of the church; perhaps here Satan under the form of paganism or paganism, as in Revelation12:3-4. The idea then is, that, at the time referred to, there would be some manifestation of the power of Satan in the pagan nations, which would be bold, arrogant, proud, loquacious, hostile to truth, and which would be well represented by the hoarse murmur of the frog.

And out of the mouth of the beastThe papacy, as above explained, Rev. 13. That is, there would be some putting forth of arrogant pretensions; some loud denunciation or complaining; some manifestation of pride and self-consequence, which would be well represented by the croaking of the frog. We have seen above (notes on Revelation16:5-6), that although the fifth vial was poured upon “the seat of the beast,” the effect was not to crush and overthrow that power entirely. The papacy would still survive, and would be finally destroyed under the outpouring of the seventh vial, Revelation 16:17-21. In the passage before us we have a representation of it as still living; as having apparently recovered its strength; and as being as hostile as ever to the truth, and able to enter into a combination, secret or avowed, with the “dragon” and the “false prophet,” to oppose the reign of truth upon the earth.

And out of the mouth of the false prophet – The word rendered “false prophet” –  ψευδοπροφήτου  pseudoprophētou – does not before occur in the Book of Revelation, though the use of the article would seem to imply that some well-known power or influence was referred to by this. Compare the notes on Revelation 10:3. The word occurs in other places in the New Testament, Matthew 7:15; Matthew 24:11, Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:22; Luke 6:26; Acts 13:6; 2 Peter 2:1; 1 John 4:1; and twice elsewhere in the Book of Revelation, with the same reference as here, Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10. In both these latter places it is connected with the “beast:” “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet”; “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are.” It would seem, then, to refer to some power that was similar to that of the beast, and that was to share the same fate in the overthrow of the enemies of the gospel. As to the application of this, there is no opinion so probable as that it alludes to the Muhammedan power – not strictly the Turkish power, for that was to be “dried up,” or to diminish; but to the Muhammedan power as such, that was still to continue for a while in its vigor, and that was yet to exert a formidable influence against the gospel, and probably in some combination, in fact, if not in form, with paganism stud the papacy. The reasons for this opinion are:

(a)    that this was referred to, in the former part of the book, as one of the formidable powers that would arise, and that would materially affect the destiny of the world – and it may be presumed that it would be again referred to in the account of the final consummation, see Revelation 9:1-11;
(b)    the name “false prophet” would, better than any other, describe that power, and would naturally suggest it in future times – for to no one that has ever appeared in our world could the name be so properly applied as to Muhammed; and,
(c)    what is said will be found to agree with the facts in regard to that power, as, in connection with the papacy and with paganism, constituting the sum of the obstruction to the spread of the gospel around the world.

It would be easy to despair in such days, but remember the promised outcome:

Revelation 17:14:  These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Where’s…Waldo?

Burning of the Waldensians

An interesting take on the popular Where’s Waldo series:

When we consider that this group of sincere and devout followers of the Word of God were persecuted and hounded throughout Europe for most of the 2nd millennia, and that it’s safe to assume that Peter Waldo and the Waldensians were hunted down like foxes, the theme for this story of Christian persecution begins to give new meaning to the phrase, ‘Where’s Waldo?’

Is this comical character who is sought out amidst the cartoonish sketchings of various crowds symbolic of that rare Christian who is mixed in among societies populous?

Surrendered to a Foreign Conqueror

Consider what F. Tupper Saussy has to say on the Protestant persecution of Catholics below.  Has personal liberty increased or decreased since the American Constitution was established?:

Anti-Catholic octopus cartoon“The basis of Roman Catholic persecution was political.  Catholics owed allegiance to Pontifex Maximus, the Bishop of Rome.  The Bishop of Rome was a foreign ruler who as a matter of public policy, regarded the British king and his Protestant Church as heretics to be destroyed.  From the American colonists’ standpoint, to allow Catholics to vote or hold office was tantamount to surrendering their colonies to a foreign conqueror.  A crucial part of maintaining personal liberty in Protestant colonial America was keeping Roman Catholics out of government.  But then came the Revolution.  The colonial citizenry fought for and won their independence from Great Britain.  They established a Constitution that amounted to … surrendering their country to a foreign conqueror.”

The Key To Understanding History

PriestleyCartoon“Attacks on the word of God are as old as the time when the unregenerate mind of fallen man became ‘enmity against God’ (Rom. 8:7). I needed to learn this key to an understanding of history. It is the explanation for the hostility of the heathen nations to Israel in the Old Testament. The unique difference of Israel lay not in themselves, but in the revelation they received from heaven. God gave them prophets who affirmed, ‘The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me, and his word is on my tongue’ (2 Sam. 23:2). ‘He shows his word to Jacob, his statutes and judgments unto Israel. He has not dealt so with any other nation’ (Psa. 147:19-20). ‘What advantage then has the Jew?’ the apostle asked (Rom. 3:1) ‘Chiefly’ – in the first place – ‘because to them were committed the oracles of God.’ At its heart, the assault on Israel was war on the word of God.”
