A Horrible Wrath of God

Martin Luther:

“But why doth the Pope name himself an Earthly God, as though the true only, and Almighty God in Heaven were not also a God on Earth. Truly the Pope’s Kingdome is a horrible wrath of God, an abomination of desolation which standeth in the Holy place, as Christ speaking directly of it saith, Who so readeth let him understand. Mat. 24.”

The “Great City” of Revelation 11

Durham on why Revelation 11’s “Great city” is Rome and not Jerusalem:

“This great City is set out in three properties, which are spiritual, that is, mystically to be understood; So, 1 Corinth. 11, they all eat that spiritual food, &c. that is, something represented by these names, which is to be understood in a spirituall sense and not literally, but as she is called MYSTERIE, BABYLON, &c. Chap. 17:5 because their is a mysterious resemblance, so here she is called spiritually Sodom, that is, for luxury, pride, fulnesse of bread and spirituall uncleannesse, abominable, Ezek. 16:2. Egypt, that is, having and exercising a spirituall tyrannie over Gods people, and abounding in spirituall Idols, as, Egypt did in a more grosse way, for which Israel could not sacrifice among them. 3. It is said, that our Lord was crucified there; not literally, but spiritually as the word before cleareth, and as that word also doth clear that is, either not only was He crucified at Jerusalem, but also there, or it is spiritually Egypt, also spiritually our Lord was crucified there, which cannot agree to Jerusalem, neither to Egypt nor Sodom at that time literally taken: neither were it any mysterie, or spiritually to be understood of Jerusalem (which never getteth the name of the great City) literally. And it is rather designed by that paraphrase, where our Lord was crucified, than by Jerusalem, because mystically the true Church is still in this Book set out by that. This part of the description agreeth to Rome, 1. In that under its dominion, Christ was crucified, and by its Authority, to wit, by a President of theirs Pontius Pilate; for, He was delvered to the Gentile. 2. In respect; of His Members, Ordinances, &c. there He had been long persecuted and crucified in them and put to open shame, Heb. 6:6. In the street of this city, that is, publickly by their Authority, as malefactors used to be in the streets: this is not private murther, but open avowed persecution. See for this, Petrarcha, lib. Epist, sine titulo Epist. 16. who wrote three hundred years since.”

The Sad Truth About Billy Graham

Billy Graham bw photo, April 11, 1966

Posted by Stormer at Bible Based Ministries:

Billy Graham: Servant of Rome, Not Servant of Christ

Billy Graham died on the 21st February 2018, at the age of 99.  He was, beyond question, one of the most influential men in modern history.  It has been estimated that he preached to something in the region of 200 million people, in at least 180 countries and territories of the world.  And hundreds of millions more heard him via radio, TV, film, etc., so that some estimates of the numbers he reached go as high as 2.2 billion people.[1]  Millions think of him as a wonderful Christian and the world’s greatest preacher.

But is this correct?  The Bible says, “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matt. 7:16).  Let us examine the doctrines and conduct of this man, to test the fruits which he produced.

His False Arminian “Gospel”

There is much we could say about the false Arminian “free will gospel” which Billy Graham preached.  He always spoke of making a “decision” for Christ – he believed man’s will is free to choose to follow Christ or not.  This is why he held his famous and utterly unbiblical “altar calls” so beloved of Arminian preachers everywhere.  Instead of the biblical truth that the new birth is a sovereign work of the Holy Spirit of God (Jn. 1:13), in which the person is entirely passive, and that only when one is born again is he able to repent and believe in Christ, Graham reduced this mighty work of God to a man’s own choice, whenever it suits him, to “make a decision” for Christ.  Putting the cart before the horse, Graham (like all Arminians) claimed that when one “decides for Christ”, then he is born again.  Salvation is thus placed in the hands of fallen, impotent, sinful man, not God.  It was, and is, nothing but a lie.

It is claimed that hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, were converted at his crusades in this way; but this is simply not true.  Numerous examples could be given, but here is just one, so representative of all the rest:

At the Graham crusade in Singapore in 1978, 20 000 “decisions for Christ” (as Arminians call them) were recorded.  But only 18 months later, when a survey was conducted of the progress of those who had recorded a “decision”, 62% of those 20 000 were first-time “commitments”, and only 49% of them (some 6076 people) ever attended a “follow-up” class or a church.  Only 1336 of them completed a follow-up course, and another 850 lost interest before they could be baptized or join a church.  Thus, a mere 18 months after the crusade, only 486 people had continued as professing “Christians”!  And what’s more, many of those 486 were attending non-Evangelical churches![2]

Were, then, those 20 000 “decisions” genuine conversions?  Certainly not.  How could they be?  No one is truly converted by “making a decision” for Christ.  No sinner, dead in sins (Eph. 2:1), can “decide” to give himself spiritual life.  A dead man can do nothing.  Regeneration is God’s work, not man’s.  Those who “decide”, who “go forward” or pray a repeat-after-me “sinner’s prayer”, fall away because they are not irresistibly drawn to Christ by the Father, for salvation (Jn. 6:44).  They have decided, but God has not drawn them.

And here is something else: Graham was not above staging his “altar calls”!  His organisation was known to have thousands of its own workers “come forward”, to create the impression of spiritual conviction, and to spur others to “come forward”!  Many of those who responded to his call, then, were “plants” in the audience, members of his own team![3]…

This Gospel Which Tends To Your Persecution

Rand Windburn, “The Abomination of Desolation: Past, Present or Future? Matthew 24:1-15 Examined,” page 12:

‘Sinners, make your decision for Christ today. By so doing, you will prove your calling and election by experiencing unparalleled
tribulation, hatred by all the world, betrayal by your family, friends
and those who you thought were your brothers and sisters in Christ,
all of which may very well culminate in your death. Jesus guarantees

deceivers will attempt to deceive you, false prophets will do their utmost to mislead you, worldwide wars will rage, either in your community or in a community near yours. You may very likely experience hunger, diseases, and the devastation of your home by earthquake and other natural disasters. And last, but not least, you will have to contend with the arch enemy of Jesus Christ and His Church, the Antichrist, whose identity will be a mystery to most, for he will be loved by the world and false Christians. And, oh yes, few will believe when you insist he is the mystery Man of Sin.’

Does this sound like a Gospel which would attract the throngs? In fact, it is this Gospel which tends to your persecution.

So Far Must the Beast have a Hand in It

Goodwin on the two witnesses:

“In that he calls the place where their dead bodies lie, and so, by consequence, where this slaughter is to be executed, ‘the city where our Lord was crucified.’ Which is not spoken of Jerusalem, but of Rome; that being here called the great city, which, chap. 17:18, is called ‘the city which then ruled over the kings of the earth;’ which can be none but Rome. And to make this good, we are to know, that the jurisdiction of the Roman empire was then in John’s time called ‘the city.’ And therefore the whole world was called Orbis Romanus, the Roman world. And in like manner now, all kingdoms subjected to the Pope are called the church of Rome, as together making that great city. And in that world the city of Rome was the regal palace, from whence issued out edicts and commands over all. And in such a sense it is said, ‘the city where Christ was crucified;’ because it was the Roman power and authority by which he was put to death, though it were done at Jerusalem, for thither did the jurisdiction of Rome reach; and therefore Christ says, ‘they should deliver him up unto the Gentiles,’ Matt. 20:19,—that is, the Romans, who then had trodden down that holy city, and got the command of it; the Pharisees owning Cæsar for their king. And thus now for the killing these witnesses, it must be that the beast of Rome shall again recover so much owning and acknowledgment in the places of the Reformation, whether by secret combination or by professed avouchment God only knows, where the witnesses are to be killed; so as, for his sake, and at his instigation, these Pharisees, either as joining with him, or else using the help of his party, shall kill them. And so far must the beast have a hand in it, that he may truly be said to do it; and that in order to the further advancement of his power in those places.”

History of the Pauline Iconoclasts

Rand Windburn, “History of the Pauline Iconoclasts:”

We begin a look into the deep, dark past of Christianity. What we have found after years of intense research is chilling, but nonetheless true. There has been a systematic, willful, and
largely successful attempt, by Church leadership, to suppress, cover-up, and ignore Church history. By ignoring the past, the average Christian views the Word from a myopic perspective, thereby losing profound doctrinal and prophetic truths. Anyone familiar with the
beliefs of Christians over the past centuries will readily admit new, errant teachings have, like leaven, permeated the Church. Other teachings, such as Pelagian – Arminianism have now become the norm, rather than the abnormal. It is the mission of this ministry to alert the sleeping Body of the misinformation and partial truths which have too long been a part of Church teaching regarding the
interpretation of the prophetic Scriptures. Along these lines, it is imperative for a right understanding of the Revelation that Christians learn the truths of history. By retelling certain portions of Church history, a history which the average Christian has never been told, we pray that eyes are opened and that lives are changed as a result of these startling and disturbing revelations – revelations

which include the profoundly depressed state of the professing Church and its innumerable drunken, sleeping shepherds. We encourage our readers to do their own personal investigations into these histories, to not just accept our word as authoritative. To facilitate the diligent readers’ inquiries, we will footnote all sources…

Bible Burning in the United States

Jehoiakim Burns the Word of God (Bible Card)

Jehoiakim Burns the Word of God

(Follow link below to see the original photograph accompanying this article)

Dowling’s History of Romanism:

“The following account of this sacrilegious outrage is from an official statement of facts, signed by four respectable citizens appointed as a committee for that purpose.

“‘About the middle of October, a Mr. Telmont, a missionary of the Jesuits, with one or more associates, came to Corbeau in this town, where the Catholic Church is located, and as they say in their own account given of their visit, ‘by the direction of the bishop of Montreal.’ On their arrival they commenced protracted meeting, which lasted several weeks, and great numbers of Catholics from this and the other towns of the county attended day after day. After the meeting had progressed several days, and the way was prepared for it, an order was issued requiring all who had bibles or testaments, to bring them in to the priest, or lay them at the feet of the missionaries. The requirement was generally complied with, and day after day bibles and testaments were carried in; and after a sufficient number was collected, they were burned. By the confession of Telmont, as appears from the affidavit of S. Hubbell, there were several burnings, but only one in public. On the 27th day of October, as given in testimony at the public meeting held there, Telmont, who was a prominent man in all the movements, brought out from the house of the resident priest, which is near the church, as many bibles as he could carry in his arms at three times, and placed them in a pile, in the open yard, and then set fire to them and burned them to ashes. This was done in open day, and in the presence of many spectators

“In the affidavit of S. Hubbell, Esq., above alluded to, who is a respectable lawyer of the place, it is stated that the President of the Bible Society, in company with Mr. Hubbell, waited upon the priests, and requested that inasmuch as the bibles had been given by benevolent societies, they should be returned to the donors and not destroyed; to which the Jesuit priest, perhaps with less cunning than usually belongs to his order, coolly replied, that ‘they had burned all they had received, and intended to burn all they could get.”

Rome’s Attack Predated the Enlightenment

Jerusalem Blade:

Where, in the post-Reformation centuries, does heterodoxy originate? With the relinquishing of the doctrine of the Bible’s inspiration by God, and then in a cascading loss of faith in biblical infallibility / inerrancy, or, on the other hand, with a rationalistic approach to textual studies, or from other factors, and possibly a combination of these and many others? Or, as you surmise, it primarily comes from the fountainhead of Enlightenment philosophy?

Rome did indeed seek to undermine the Reformation’s dependence on the Scripture alone, and through them by faith alone in Christ alone. They sought to execute this work of undermining by bringing forth variants from other manuscripts in the Vatican library that the Reformers eschewed as being unreliable, and also by seeking to attack their Hebrew Scriptures over the issue of the vowel points. For the Catholics their Tradition was above the Bible, and the church had – they said – given birth to the Bible. The Reformer’s view of the authority of God’s word in the Bible was a lethal attack on the very foundations of Rome.

I think Rome’s attack on the texts predated the full bloom of the Enlightenment by perhaps a little less than a century. Richard Simon (1638-1712), a Catholic scholar, is considered by Metzger as perhaps the father of textual criticism – highly critical of the Bible (OT & New) in the vein of Metzger. But then John Mill (1645-1708) brought Enlightenment / rationalistic thought to bear upon the Bible, and he is considered one of the very first textual critics in the modern sense of the term. So yes, the spirit of the age – the philosophy of the Enlightenment – in which reason was held to be the primary source and legitimacy for authority, was the immediate genesis of the heterodoxy that would come to fruition in the church in centuries to follow.

This development of textual criticism according to rationalistic principles – as opposed to the faith principles of the Reformers – would naturally result in views antagonistic to the Reformation churches’ stand on divine inspiration and God’s providential preservation of the Scriptures.

Conquests versus Crusades

I wanted to find some visuals showing the Islamic conquests and the crusades in the Middle Ages.  Here is a  video I found in case it is of interest to you. The video contains commentary discussing violent Jihad by, of course, Islamists and not all Muslims, in the Middle Ages.  It also shows the Crusades by, of course, some and not all Christians during the same time period. I found the visual helpful to see where the conflicts took place:
