To Conservative Roman Catholics, “Pope Francis” is Like the Borgia Popes

This is the Last Great Opposition

Ottheinrich Folio299r Rev16B

Jonathan Edwards’ (1703-1758) in A History of the Work of Redemption:

“Satan has ever had a dread of having his kingdom overthrown, and he had been apposing it ever since the day of Constantine the Great. To this end he has set up two mighty kingdoms of Antichrist and Mahomet, and brought in all the heresies, superstitions and corruptions, which there are in the world. But when he sees all begin to fail, it will rouse him up exceedingly. If Satan dreaded being cast out of the Roman Empire, how much more does he dread being cast out of the whole world!

“It seems as though in this last great opposition which shall be made against the church to defend the kingdom of Satan, all the forces of Antichrist and Mahometanism and heathenism will be united: all the forces of Satan’s visible kingdom through the whole world of mankind. And therefore it is said, that ‘spirits of devils… [shall] go forth unto the kings of the earth, and of the whole world, to gather them together to the battle of that great day of God Almighty’ (Rev. 16:14). And these spirits are said to come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet; that is, there shall be the spirit of Popery, and the spirit of Mahometanism, and the spirit of heathenism, all united. By the beast is meant Antichrist; by the dragon, in this book, is commonly meant the devil, as he reigns over his heathen kingdom; by the false prophet, in this book, is sometimes meant the Pope and his clergy, but here an eye seems to be had to Mahomet, whom his followers call the great prophet of God. This will be as it were the dying struggles of the old serpent, a battle wherein he will fight as one that is almost desperate.” (p. 375-376)

“But Christ and his church shall in this battle obtain a complete and entire victory over their enemies…” (p. 377)

“In this victory, the seventh vial shall be poured out. It is said of the great army that should be gathered together against Christ, ‘And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon’, and then it is said, ‘And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done’ (Rev. 16:16-17). Now the business is done for Satan and his adherents. When this victory is obtained, all is in effect done. Satan’s last and greatest opposition is conquered; all his measures are defeated; the pillars of his kingdom broken asunder, and will fall of course. The devil is utterly baffled and confounded, and knows not what else to do. He now sees his Antichristian, and Mahometan, and heathenish kingdoms through the world all tumbling about his ears. He and his most powerful instruments are taken captive. Now that is in effect done which the church of God had been so long waiting and hoping for, and so earnestly crying to God for, saying, ‘How long, O Lord, holy and true!’ Now the time is come.” (p. 377-378)

A Protestant Response to Francis’ Statement on Mary’s Relationship to the Church

MarianartintheCatholicChurchjf0181 07

From a now-deleted website:

Pope Francis on Mary:

“She is a true mother who gives us life in Christ, and in the communion of the Holy Spirit, brings us into a common life with our brothers and sisters.”

“The model of motherhood for the Church is the Blessed Virgin Mary, who in the fullness of time conceived through the Holy Spirit and gave birth to the Son of God,”…. “Her motherhood continues through the Church, who brings forth sons and daughters through baptism, whom she nourishes through the word of God.”

The Protestant Response:

“Francis is the worst of frauds, for he seeks to pawn off his church as the church, when it is an assembly that teaches that men must believe in man-made doctrines in order to be saved, trust in creatures to be saved, and look her priesthood in order to be saved. It is antichrist at its core.”

A Tract For The Current Papal Visit

[Please note: Elsewhere I have written about the trip that “Pope Francis” will be making to Philadelphia, September 26-27, and also the street evangelism efforts that that a number of Reformed believers are going to be participating in. I’m offering this article here (or some edited version of it) as the text for the hand-out piece to be given to Roman Catholics who are coming to Philadelphia and adoring this “pope”. If you decide to read this through, please take a minute to comment — let me know if I missed anything, or if there is a point that I should not be making — thank you. – John Bugay.]

Read and obtain the tract here:

Church Fathers Anticipated Antichrist After the Fall of Rome

Out of His Mouth:

Invasions of the Roman Empire 1“The testimony of all of the Fathers is not unanimous here, but there exists at least one clear and consistent line of interpretation among them that saw Daniel 7 as a continuum of historical events with no unexplained gaps. It had not been fulfilled in the recent past under the Greek empire (as some modern commentators have said), and it was not to be fulfilled  several thousand years into the future (as others have taught). Simply put, there had been three empires before, the fourth was in its in decline, and the ten-way division was upon us, as Daniel had prophesied. The rise of Antichrist simply could not be far away.”

What To Look Forward To In The Millennium

Dr. Loraine Boettner on Postmillennialism [Note: The Antipas Chronicles takes the position that this state will not be realized until the destruction of Antichrist, which has not yet occurred]:

Apocalypse 31. Satan bound for 1000 years. Revelation cap 20 v 3. Loutherbourg. Phillip Medhurst Collection“The Millennium to which the Postmillennialist looks forward is thus a golden age of spiritual prosperity during this present dispensation, that is, during the Church age, and is to be brought about through forces now active in the world. It is an indefinitely long period of time, perhaps much longer than a literal one thousand years. The changed character of individuals will be reflected in an uplifted social, economic, political and cultural life of mankind. The world at large will then enjoy a state of righteousness such as at the present time has been seen only in relatively small and isolated groups, as for example in some family circles, some local church groups and kindred organizations.

This does not mean that there ever will be a time on this earth when every person will be a Christian, or that all sin will be abolished. But it does mean that evil in all its many forms eventually will be reduced to negligible proportions, that Christian principles will be the rule, not the exception, and that Christ will return to a truly Christianized world.”

And some food for thought from the same article:

Rev. J. Marcellus Kik:

“That there is still a remnant of paganism and papalism in the world is chiefly the fault of the Church. The Word of God is just as powerful in our generation as it was during the early history of the Church. The power of the Gospel is just as strong in this century as in the days of the Reformation. These enemies could be completely vanquished if the Christians of this day and age were as vigorous, as bold, as earnest, as prayerful, and as faithful as Christians were in the first several centuries and in the time of the Reformation”

(An Eschatology of Victory, p. 250).

Rushdoony on Amillennialism

“Not surprisingly, amillennialism produces a retreating and crabbed outlook, a church in which men have no thought of victory but only of endless nit-picking about trifles. It produces a phariseeism of men who believe they are the elect in a world headed for hell, a select elite who must withdraw from the futility of the world around them. It produces what can be called an Orthodox Pharisees Church, wherein failure is a mark of election. Lest this seem an exaggeration, one small denomination has a habit of regarding pastors who produce growth in their congregations with some suspicion, because it is openly held by many pastors that growth is a mark of compromise, whereas incompetence and failure are marks of election! Amillennial pastors within this church regularly insist that success surely means compromise, and their failures are a mark of purity and election. Not surprisingly, postmillennials cannot long remain in this basically and almost exclusively amillennial church.”

Cardinal Rebiba and Roman Catholic Apostolic Succession

Apologetica Christiana – Christian Apologetics:

Card REBIBA“However, an interesting fact arises in the Roman Catholic apostolic succession. Over 95% of modern Roman Catholic bishops, including the current pope, can trace their apostolic succession only as far as the 16th century, to a cardinal named Scipione Rebiba.”…

“The interesting thing about this is that nobody is sure who consecrated Rebiba as a bishop. No supporting documentation has been found. which means that the episcopal genealogies of 95% of today’s bishops stop at Rebiba and cannot be traced back to the Apostles.”

Is There Any Room For Optimism?

Sean Anderson on Junius’ Postmillennialism:

“So, with the ‘golden age’ perhaps far behind us, in our dark world, is there any room for optimism? I would say so, yes. Even at a time when Satan prowled, when Rome slew the faithful, when we had turned away from the Word, the Almighty God, in the words of Calvin, ‘occasionally raised up apostles, or at least evangelists, in their stead, as has been done in [the Reformation]. For such were needed to bring back the Church from the revolt of Antichrist’. There have been further revivals since, and God’s holy ministry shall continue until the end of the age, so let us be fervent in prayer that God deliver us from darkness, but that we may also shine as a light in that darkness. Let us never forget that the ultimate victory is already won. The Lord Jesus’ Revelation to John ends with eternal bliss for all who have taken refuge in the Son.”
