John Calvin on futurism and the papal antichrist

Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. (1 John 2:18)

John Calvin rejects the notion of a futuristic interpretation of antichrist, arguing that the office belongs to the papacy:

As ye have heard that antichrist will come.  He speaks as of a thing well known. We may hence conclude that the faithful had been taught and warned from the beginning respecting the future disorder of the Church, in order that they might, carefully keep themselves in the faith they professed, and also instruct posterity in the duty of watchfulness.
